Title: The King
Author: J.R. Ward
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #12
Long live the King…
After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk.
Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them.
The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?
Okay, now let me start off by telling EVERYONE I absolutely LOVE this series! It is one of my absolute favorites that has Vampires! I have read all the books in this series thus far and anytime ANYONE asks if I know of a good paranormal read this is the first one I recommend. I love everything about these brothers!
This book I will first say I was not expecting it. I thought that maybe we would be getting one of the shadows, but when she announced that this was going to be Wrath and Beths book I got excited because even though they already have their HEA for the most part there is a lot that has come up over time that I was looking forward to getting answers to. I will admit that it has been a long time since I have read the first book in the series, but I wish I could go back and read it from the start again. I have purchased all the books and will be at one time.
I couldn’t wait to get started on this one because although we get glimpses of Wrath and Beth in the other books as the series goes along I was excited to get another book for them. I to this day wish that Wrath would get is vision back. I ache for him to be able to see again. The Warden has been asked and she has said that it isn’t going to happen, but I will still hope for it. I will still hope that some type of miracle will happen and he gets to see again. So what I loved about this book… I enjoyed the back story for Wraths parents. At first I wasn’t sure what it was. It took me a minute to put it together, but I did like it. I absolutely loved when Wrath came to his mother early on. I love that we got to see more of iAm and Trez also, we also get to see Boo again. I was wondering what had happened to Beth’s cat. There is something about that cat! I’m waiting for what the deal with him comes out. I just know there is something more. She mentioned at one of her signings that there was more to the cat, but she can’t say or doesn’t know just yet because it hasn’t come to light. For me the BEST part was when the brothers all got together and we get more of Lassiter! I have missed that guy!
Now, as much as I HATE to do this I need to explain some issues that I had with it. I for the most part love all of her books. BUT for me the last 3 books, including this one, have slowly gone down hill for me. Starting with Torh’s book. I felt like it was more about Xhex and JM and I also didn’t feel like he got his HEA. I also don’t remember them ever ‘bonding’. We got Qhuinn and Blay and oh how I was waiting for that one…as we all were. I did catch myself skimming through some chapters to get back to Qhuinn and Blay’s story. I just wasn’t interested in what else was going on. I am sure others may have felt that way as well. 🙂 This one I think was the worse. I felt like it was all over the place. We got Wrath and Beth, although I loved the flashbacks I felt like it kind of took away from the current story of Wrath and Beth. Because to be 100% honest, I couldn’t figure out the connection to the current time other than when Wrath goes to his mother…before he was ever born. Other than the backstory I’m not sure of the purpose. Maybe it will come up later in the series?? We got a lot of iAm and Trez which was fine and I enjoyed it. But one of the other things, we got a little bit of Xcore, along with Assail and Sola. Now that being said. I have no clue what the connection between Assail and the brothers are so much because there is something there but it hasn’t been described so much. There was a favor they owed him because he helped Wrath when he got shot, and he took them up on that one in this book. So I thought we were going to get more information on where that relationship was going to go…not so much. What was strange. I thought was we were getting him in like every other chapter then all of a sudden he wasn’t brought up again. I have no problem stating that I am not a big fan of jumping around in books. Which is why for the most part I am a bigger fan of first person books. You can’t really go from one character to another and jump all around. Okay, nevermind I take that back. I have read a book or two that did that. I understand the desire to keep people on edge at the end of a chapter. BUT this one, there were moments where you get two or three paragraphs and it changed characters a few times with in a chapter; that, drove me over the top a few times. I will not lie and say that it made me want to put it down. Because well I will be first to admit there is nothing that will make me put these books down. Skim though?? YES. It did make me skim through some parts. I just don’t think she should have said it was Beth and Wrath’s book because to me, it just didn’t feel that way.
The cover?? That is another issue I had with this book. I understand that she also re-did the first book cover also but I am not and have never been a big fan of seeing faces on the cover of books. I didn’t like the guy they put on Torh’s book either. The only exception was Qhuinn and Blay’s book, he looked like he could have been Qhuinn! This one. Okay, this was tricky. SO many have their own pick as to who The King looks like. For me personally, it’s Jason Mamoa. I really wish that the cover would have been done differently. The back of the throne with his hand hanging over the arm with his ring on it petting George (or not) I think would have been a great one. You know who it is and you don’t have to see a face of a man that absolutely is not the King in your mind. One other thing was…where were the lessers?? There was only one in the whole book. I had thought for sure we were going to get more of the brothers in this one, but we really didn’t and that made me kind of sad. I missed them and felt like this one just kind of wasn’t the norm as far as BDB books goes. I wanted more joking around more smart ass remarks I wanted to laugh and I only found myself laughing really at one part. I’m not sure if she was trying to avoid putting the brothers in the book, but there would be one brother that popped up here and there. I just felt like this wasn’t like the other books in the series where we get the main story of one brother but we still get to see the others.
We are getting iAm and Trez in the next book she said and I hope that she doesn’t jump around as much in that one. I will be reading it though, because I won’t pass on a brother’s book. I do love this group of guys. I just hope that we get more of their joking and them just being them. It did end well. It ended and made me think, okay now the title makes sense, but that was towards the ending. The rest of the book didn’t feel like the title fit.
