Writing BDSM and the Badass Brats series

I’ve written a ton of BDSM stories by now and I rarely feel the need for research anymore. I mean clearly, if I need to, if I put something into a scene that requires research, I will do it – like with the wax play and the needle play in Take Me, Break Me. I also have friends who seem to have tried out most of the possibilities in BDSMland that I care to detail in my stories. They’ve also tried a few things I’d never want to put in a story as they don’t interest me.

I’ve always understood Dominance and submission, though extreme bratting is a little outside my realm. My co-authors are far bigger smartasses than I am so I often bow to them for expertise on that.

Yes indeedy, the Badass Brats books are at the far end of the D/s spectrum. Brats are hardcore. Lol

Adding the back-talking, the potty-mouth disobedience, and the taunting is not my strongest point. I can write sexy. I can write daunting Doms. I can write BDSM scenes that will have readers fanning themselves and melting in droves, but writing bratting…Sorcha Black and Leia Shaw beat me hands down at that.

Yes, any Dom taking on one or two of our brats is in for a rollercoaster ride. Not that his girls don’t feel the sting of his hand or paddle or strap due to their teasing, but that won’t stop a true brat from mouthing off again next time they see a reason to tug their lion’s tail.

Some in the BDSM lifestyle are quite mortified at bratting and see it as disrespect to the Dom/me. Even one of my tried and true beta readers hates bratting (Mj, you know that’s you). Reading Mj’s critique of The Dom with the Perfect Brats was interesting, to say the least. Toward the end of the book she cried out (in writing, but I could literally hear her distress) “why are they still doing this after so many months of training?!!!” Exclamation marks added by me to show my poor beta reader’s anguish.

Umm, Mj, it’s because that’s what they do, and that’s kind of hinted at in the series title. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make a brat shut up. Well you can, with a gag, but one day you do have to take it off.

Thus the BDSM in the Badass Brats series is a bit crazier than in a story where the sub bows to the Dom’s every wish and command. But we all know sassy is more fun, don’t we, and what brat isn’t sassy?

I got many laughs reading through my co-writers’ chapters when the brats were out in full force with their mouths in top gear.

A teensy excerpt from The Dom with the Perfect Brats from Gemma’s point of view:

“You two are adventurous for vanilla girls.” Cross smiled. “I was very pleased last night.” Grabbing Izzy first, he pulled her in and kissed the top of her head. Next, he took Gemma by the nape and pulled her toward him then planted a kiss on her forehead.

Though she felt a little burst of glee at the praise, Gemma snorted derisively. “Glad we meet with your approval, sir.” The sir slipped out accidentally and she regretted immediately. Especially when he gave her a disturbing grin.

“Excellent point.”

Izzy tossed her a dirty look.

“When we’re alone together, you’re both to call me sir.”

Izzy rolled her eyes. “I’m having school flashbacks.”

“Yeah,” Gemma motioned to the table, “shouldn’t the table be round, Lancelot?”

Cross sighed then reached for the strap. “I think you both need a taste of the strap to get you thinking clearly.”

“No!” Izzy yelled, giggling. “We’ll be good! We promise.”

He arched a brow at Gemma, clearly waiting for her to agree.

“I’ll be,” she still couldn’t say it, “less bad.”

With a defeated grunt, he withdrew his hand from the evil strap. “You two could give Sabrina and Q a run for their money.”
